This might make your base difficult to assault, but it will also make it difficult to break siege, because you are then the attacker, and the other side gets the defensive bonus of the tile.

Not in the latest version of the game.

It will make finding spies/saboteurs/assassins more difficult though.

However if you have a ring of more exposed territory surrounding your HQ with a nice recon unit doing a constant patrol it gets a lot easier to find those pesky stealth heroes.

If you really want to go hardcore for a defensive game and are having a tough time with it I'd suggest restarting a few times until you get a map layout that suits the playstyle. I know, it's cheating but sometimes it's really fun to just sit off in your corner building up an unstoppable army of DOOM (tm) and then rampaging across the wastelands with it.

here is an example of an almost perfect position to turtle from.

Bear in mind, though, that unlike other strategy games, Turtling will not increase your defensive armies ad-infinitum, only up to the limit of what you have in your deck.

So you may find yourself no better off than if you were being more aggressive.

The exceptions, of course, are those cards/special abilities/research areas that let you create new units without cards - but most of these are expensive to use (with poss. exception of xenos - not played them comprehensively) so may not be available if your play has been too conservative.

As mentioned above, make sure you are well defended from airstrikes, missile strikes and saboteurs/assassination.

And, of course, forget defensive play if your agents report the presence of the Cult of Rapture....
